The young women enrolled in our second
year Muggie Leader program have the
opportunity to travel overseas and join in a
service learning project.  The goal of the
project is to allow the girls to bring the
lessons  they have learned in the Betsey Cox
camp community and share them with the
larger world community.  They begin the
summer season at camp for first session--
three weeks and at the end of the project
they return to camp for third session-- three
weeks,to share their experiences with us.

The traveling groups are small- 10 muggie
leaders and 2 staff. At least one staff
member leading the trip is a Betsey Cox
Staff member, trained to our high standards.
The Betsey Cox service learning project began during the
summer of 2005. The Muggie Leaders of that year, joined a
Betsey Cox alumnae in Guatemala. They worked planting
trees in an ecopark, helped do maintenance at a local school
and worked on a archeological dig.

In 2006, Betsey Cox returned to Guatemala for a second
year. In 2007, Betsey Cox partnered with an organization
called
Sustainable Harvest, an organization dedicated to
helping third world countries utilize their resources with
sustainable, and environmentally sound practices.

In 2007, we sent two groups of BC women to Central
America. One group to Belize and one to Honduras. The
Sustainable Harvest experience also includes a homestay, a
new addition to the program.  In both Belize and Honduras,
the Muggie Leaders  work in 2 separate communities with
time to travel as a group between the two experiences.  The
girls built pig pens, chicken coops, and sustainable ovens for
the communities to cook with.

In 2008, we returned to Honduras with Sustainable Harvest
but this year the focus was on planting trees and vegetables
using terraced agricultural methods.

In 2009, we traveled with Sustainable Harvest again, but to
Panama!

In 2010, we extended our adventures to South America. To
Ecuador, the home of long time staff members in our
community.

In 2011,  we again sent two groups of BC women out into
the world; one return to Ecuador, and one to travel to
Turkey. Our Turkey adventure offered Betsey Cox a new
partnership  and collaborative adventure with
Volunteers
for Peace and organization located in Burlington, VT.

For 2012, we have partnered with
Alterra Global Education
Initiatives, in Washington DC and our service trip will travel
to Cuba!

It is our intention to continue these excellent programs into
the future.
